Julia Creek

Julia Creek was a delightful little town. Again we spent time at the library and I spent the best part of my week talking with Chris the librarian, finding out all about life in her small town.

loads of toys kept the kids busy for hours, and asking to go back again “tomorrow”

Micah enjoyed dressing up and making the librarian “Chris” a cup of tea regularly throughout our visit.

She shared some wonderful stories about her life, family, the town and even her duel role as librarian and funeral director of this tiny town.

As usual the library had an abundance of toys and books, which kept the kids occupied for hours.

Julia Creek also has a great swimming pool in town . It only cost $1/ child and $2/adult and you can spend as long as you like. Water slides splash park, diving platforms and a lane pool. What was extra special is we met up with some other travelling families and the kids all played together.

the water park was a total bargain, and open every afternoon.

Just across the road from the pool is free mini golf. All equipment provided including varying sized golf clubs. It is also under shade, and despite the heat in Julia Creek it’s in pretty good nick. Really appreciated this free little activity presumably put on by the council.

mini golf was a huge hit with my kids, it was a shaded area, which I was grateful for, as it was quite hot. Mini golf is located right next to the caravan park and splash park.

There is an awesome playground in Julia Creek (fenced) with fresh drinking water to fill up your drink bottles, and not only does it have BBQ facilities but this is the first time I have ever seen a sink so you can do all your washing up! Thanks Lions club for this facility - much appreciated.

The Information centre is incredible and one of the draw cards for us was to see the little Dunnarts. Unfortunately they are quite endangered. They have 1 Dunnart in the centre that you can go have a look at. you can watch the feeding at 10am and again 2pm. Gosh he is a cutie. It was a great information in the centre also on Dunnarts as a species and why they are so endangered. They also had a very entertaining video clips with locals about Julia Creek we really enjoyed watching it.

I was impressed I got this photo of the little guy, because he was very fast. The feeding was such a wonderful experience. Low cost and I am so glad we saw it, because these guys are really endangered, there numbers are low, and they are just not able to increase them, as much as they need to..

The Dunnart experience centre, had loads of interactive displays, and short videos you can watch on topics of interest. Loads to learn in here, about the local area.

PLUS!!

VR!! The kids got to participate in a VR mustering experience. I had read about this activity but didn’t mention anything because I know that anything VR can be costly….however I was pleasantly surprised that it was only $5/pp. The kids absolutely loved it and were learning at the same time!

VR was a hit with the kids

Unfortunately we missed the other free museums available in town. We had a bit of information overload from the awesome information centre so we left these museums for another time, however they looked. Great so I would reccommend for anyone travelling through to stop by.

The Julia Creek Opera House, was a little building of historical items and information for tourists to read.

Julia Creek was a great little town to visit, just make sure you do your shopping before coming here, it was the most expensive grocery prices I have seen since heading in the outback.

as well as all that, we were extra lucky to be in the town, at the same time as a touring theatre company, Jally Entertainment. We got front row seats at the performance of Snowy White and the Seven Cool Dudes.

we joined the local school children for the peformance and it was completely free thanks to the local council for putting this on for its locals, and visitors, it was a highlight for our kids, for sure.
